Beyond “Busy”. May the Fourth Be With You!

Hey friends,

When you catch up with a friend or jump on a call, do you usually open with the standard questions: “How’ve you been?” or “How are you doing?”

More often than not, you might hear the default answer in a single word: Busy!

It’s a safe answer, but it doesn’t tell me how the person is – only that their schedule is packed. Sometimes “busy” is a shield. It’s easier than admitting we feel overwhelmed, exhausted, or simply don’t have the emotional bandwidth (or time) for a deep conversation.

I’m no different. Sometimes “busy” is just the path of least resistance.

What is your default answer?

When we automatically use “busy” to describe our lives, we have to ask: Is our calendar full because we want it to be, or because we can’t say no? Are we actually fulfilled by the things occupying our time?

My own calendar is a mix. It makes me feel both busy and fulfilled, often alternating hour by hour. I think that’s the reality for most of us. The goal isn’t to be “un-busy” – it’s to be aware that we’re prioritizing things that are meaningful and worth our time.

May the Fourth Be With You!

I’m not a die-hard Star Wars fan, but since today is May 4th – an “If You Know, You Know” kind of thing – I decided to inject some play into my regular virtual ROW+ STRENGTH coaching session. I turned my class into a “May the Fourth Be With You” session, complete with some dumbbell “light saber” action. I actually searched “lightsaber moves” online 🙂

There was a little bit of eye rolling at first, but it turned  a genuine workout into a lot of fun. Coaching strength and fitness is truly fulfilling for me, but today it became something extra enjoyable, and fulfilling.

Even the essential, non-negotiable parts of our schedule – like our health – fitness and strength can be a source of joy, even if they are on the calendar “to-do busy category”.

If you had one hour today to do something truly fulfilling, and the permission to scratch one “unfulfilling” thing off your list to make room for it, what would you do?

Strength isn’t just about what you can lift; it’s about having the agency to choose how you spend your energy.

Maybe an upcoming theme will be Yoda’s famous line: “Do. Or do not. There is no try” 😉
